In June, New Concepts for Living (NCFL) proudly unveiled their new 81,000 sq. ft. Achievement Center (Day Program) and Headquarters in Paramus, NJ. The 20-month project, from conceptual design to occupancy, involved a complete interior gut and rebuild of the former Barnes and Noble store. Overseeing this ambitious endeavor was NCFL’s Director of Facilities, Daniel Mihalinec. Dan ensured the project stayed on track and brought NCFL’s vision for this remarkable facility to life. In this Team Spotlight, we get to know Dan and discuss the new Day Program and upcoming projects.

Q: What has been your favorite thing about working for New Concepts for Living?
A: My favorite thing about working at NCFL is the collaborative working environment. Each department works tirelessly to be innovative and proactive for our mission, and collectively, we have been able to provide higher levels of service and elevated experiences for our clients. Additionally, knowing the hard work and effort we set forth daily is directly improving the lives of our clients is extremely rewarding.

Q: Tell us about the new Achievement Center (Day Program) and what you hope it means for the future of NCFL.
A: The new day program is unrivaled throughout NJ and perhaps the country. The finished space keeps the client at the forefront in all aspects of the design. It is truly a remarkable facility for the clients we serve. This facility will act as our blueprint for future facility construction, taking our lessons learned and improving each time. My hope is that the new Achievement Center will remind us of all the great accomplishments we are capable of together and continue to take NCFL to new heights while setting the bar for the IDD space.

Q: The new Day Program has many impressive features like beautiful sensory rooms, life skills training rooms, and much more. What is your favorite part of the new Achievement Center (Day Program)?
A: My favorite part is the 5,500 sq. ft. “Town Center.” It’s a beautiful large space where everyone can gather for activities and events. In fact, it’s where we held our Grand Opening ceremony. We installed a 30 ft. diameter skylight, RGB lighting, a full sound system, floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, and a 20 ft. x 12 ft. LED video wall. A mural dedicated to Paramus landmarks spans across all the walls. It’s a very impressive room.

Q: What would you say to someone thinking about working at NCFL or bringing their loved one to NCFL?
A: NCFL checks all the boxes for satisfied employment. We are challenged daily, rewarded for hard work, and given the autonomy to make decisions. The collaborative working environment across all teams creates a harmonious and enjoyable work atmosphere. For those contemplating bringing a loved one into our care, in addition to the various built spaces in both our commercial and residential portfolio, the most important element is the high standard of care our program teams provide for our clients. It is amazing observing our staff work closely with our clients on a daily basis and seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces.

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself!
A: I am married to my amazing wife, Daniela, and we share two young children, Luca, 3 years old, and Adriana, 9 months old. I am continuing to embrace “Dad Life.” We love to travel and create memories enjoying new places and experiences together. I love to read about history, mostly WWII, but all history is of interest to me. I played basketball during my college days and still get on the court from time to time. It’s a great cerebral game that offers a lot of benefits for me, and I hope to continue playing as long as possible. I am also a Jets fan and am hoping for a big season, finally this year!
